'To Be King' at The Coronet International Festival 2017

21 Sep 2017

Two extraordinary South African exhibitions feature for the opening four days of the inaugural Coronet International Festival:

'To Be King'

By Christine Dixie

01 – 04 November, 15:00 – 19:30

Free entry

Acclaimed South African artist Christine Dixie explores Velásquez’s iconic sixteenth century painting Las Meninas (The Ladies in Waiting), one of the most important paintings in Western art history.

Dixie’s film and sculpture installation re-contextualises the masterpiece, highlighting the contending narratives of the entwined relationships between space, power, history and the performance of gender, as well as what the painting might reveal about the underlying social and cultural dynamics of the time.

A Guided Tour of the Exhibition: 'For Soprano with Handbag'

By William Kentridge and Joanna Dudley

01 – 04 November, 19:30

£20 / £15

South African artist William Kentridge, renowned for his animated expressionist drawings and films exploring time and the history of colonialism, returns to the Coronet following his sell-out success Paper Music.

In this innovative exhibition by the artist, combining live art, drama, film and sculpture, audiences will be guided by soprano and artist Joanna Dudley through a unique immersive installation. This undefinable new work, commissioned by the Coronet, will challenge all the senses: a performance which is both a guide to the exhibition and also an exhibit within it.
